Description:
Small, rectangular jar (missing its cover), composed of red earthenware with green and blue matte glazes, made by Ellen "Nellie" Sinclair Birks (1881-1951) of the Deerfield Pottery, impressed marks "DP" and "B" on the base, Condition: Good condition, some abrasions to the glaze surface, small nick or cut into glaze on corner. According to Suzanne Flynt, Chauncey Thomas hired two women to work at the Deerfield Pottery. Along with Charlotte Lawrence, Ellen Birks, the 29-year old daughter of the Unitarian minister, Richard Birks, "learned to make beautiful pottery" there. Her sister Florence Birks recounted, "I have two large lamps she made, and a potpourri jar." Two covered jars by Nellie Birks, signed "DP/B," have the same matt green glaze Thomas used on a small cylindrical bud vase. According to the Greenfield Gazette (July 9, 1910), Deerfield Pottery also incorporated blue, dull yellow, and brown matt glazes "in soft, low toned colors, all the subtle variations and combinations to which fire and clay lend themselves."
