Description:
Silver teaspoon with an upturned spatulate-end handle with a short mid-rib and small elliptical bowl (somewhat dented) with a rounded drop and seven-lobed shell on the back, which is marked "BB" in a rectangle on the reverse of the handle for Benjamin Brenton (1710-1766), and engraved with the initials "MS" in block letters on the back of the handle. This spoon is from a collection of silver spoons from the Viola Wilby estate. A paper tag attached to the spoon reads: "Mary Stebbins / c. 740" and "@" in a circle on one side and "Mr. Hollister copied / & sold as / Deerfield spoons.."MS" stand for Mary Stebbins (1725-1797), the wife of Joseph Stebbins (1718-1797) of Deerfield who married in the early 1740s. After apprenticing with Arnold Collins (bef.1664-bef.1735) of Newport, Brenton worked as a silversmith in Newport from about 1730 to 1747.
