Description:
Silver teaspoon with a downturned fiddle handle, pointed shouiders, and pointed oval bowl, which is marked "Jones, Lows, & Ball" in a rectangle on the back of the handle, and engraved "SMW" in script on the front of the handle for Sarah Merritt Wells (b.1796), the mother of George Merritt Wells (1839-1883) of Deerfield. John B. Jones was a partner in the firms of: Jones & Ward with Richard Ward c. 1809; Baldwin & Jones with Jabez Baldwin 1816-1820; Putnam & Low with Edward Putnam and John J. Lows 1822-1828; John B. Jones & Co. with Samuel S. Ball 1833-1834; Jones, Lows & Ball 1839-1846; Jones, Ball & Poor c. 1840-1846; Jones Ball & Co. 1850-1852; Jones, Shreve, Brown & Co. c. 1854. This is one of a collection of silver spoons from the Viola Wilby estate.
