Description:
One of two mixed-style side chairs (see 1250) in maple covered with old brown stain. After the Queen Anne vase-shaped backs were introduced into the colonies in the 1720s, they were often combined with the older William and Mary rush-seated, block-and-vase turned bases that were popular on banister back chairs. This mixed style was popular through the eighteenth century; the key to their dating is based on their base turnings. The chair has a broad, yoked neck crest rail over inverted vase-shaped back splat; the splat was reversed during repairs about 1900. There are molded, shaped back siles; a new rush seat; turned front legs ending in Spanish or brush feet; a turned front stretcher; rectangular side and back stretchers; and rectangular, flared back legs. The attenuated lines and vertical proportions are recognizable features of rural New England chairs such as this one, which was purportedly originally owned by the Billings family and later by the Williams family of Deerfield.
