Description:
Silver tablespoon (unmarked) with a pointed oval bowl and downturned coffin-fiddle handle, which is engraved "DH' in script on the handle. This is one of a collection of silver spoons from the Viola Wilby estate. According to a handwritten list of family objects in the HD 2009.26.1-.34 data file written by Elizabeth Hawks Wells (1845-1938), the wife of George Merritt Wells (1839-1883) of Deerfield: "The "D.H." spoon came fron the Hoyts - and must hark back to the Old Indian House i think." An attached paper tag reads: "David Hoyt/ 1800-10" and on the reverse "Indian House." David Hoyt (1757-1803) was an innkeeper and tavern owner. and used the Old Indian House as his home and place of business. His son David Hoyt (1801-1868) was also a Deerfield innkeeper and captain of steamboat on the Connecticut River. This spoon could have belonged to either man.
