Description:
Mahogany and pine stand with the two drop-leaves cut with square rather than rule-joint edges and hinged to the fixed top, over two drawers retaining their original wood pulls and four turned legs. According to a handwritten list of family objects in the file by Elizabeth Hawks Wells (1845-1938), the wife of George Merritt Wells (1839-1883) of Deerfield: "Light stand - Belonged to Sarah Merriett Wells. Part of the furniture of the old house where George Merritt Wells and his brothers and sister - and all of his children were born. In attic of Deerfield House." In 1825, Joel Benjamon Wells (1795-1841) of Deerfield, married Sarah Merritt (b. 1796), the daughter of Simeon Merritt (1762-1829) and Pamela Baker (1766-1843) of Conway, Massachusetts. In 1872, their son, George Merritt Wells, married Elizabeth Hawks Wells, the daughter of Charles Wells of Shelburne.
