Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery on a plain linen ground, which has the inscription, "Emma Hawks Aged 12 / Deerfield July 5th 1811." Emma (b.1799) was the daughter of Zeeb Hawks (b.1767) of Deerfield and Rebecca Saxton Hawks (1766-1830), the daughter of Daniel Saxton (b.1732) of Somers, Connecticut. In 1825, Emma married Dr. Joseph Ballard (b.1793) of Homer, NY. Emma's older sister, Stata (b.1792) married Dr. William Bartlett, the son of Dr. Phinehas Bartlett (1745-1799), who moved from Connecticut to Ashfield, Massachusetts, in 1756, and his second wife, Sarah Symonds Ballard Bartlett who married in 1781. William Bartlett was born in Ashfield and moved to Homer, NY. It is not known if Joseph Ballard was a relative. The sampler has eight rows of the alphabets in upper and lower case, the numbers 1-9, and a repeat of the date "AD 1811;" over two white and black birds perched on a fruit basket flanked by two flower baskets; and a four-sided zig-zag border.
