Description:
General Putnam, one of the heroes of the battle of Bunker's Hill, was relegated to less responsible positions by George Washington as the war progressed. This engraving is after the mezzotint probably engraved by R. Purcell under the pseudonym of C. Corbutt and one of a series done to supply the British public with (fictitious) portraits of American military leaders. Here the cannon on which Putnam is leaning is excluded. Portrait of General-Major Israel Putnam in military attire wearing a gorget. Entitled at the bottom: "Israel Putnam. Esqr/General Major der Americaner." From the book, Geschichte der Kriege in und ausser Europa ... Eilster und zwölster Theil ..., by Gabriel Nicolas Raspe
