Description:
"James Greenfield," signed by owner. James Greenfield is listed as a private from May 12, 1775 to December 19, 1775 in the 6th Connecticut.Regiment. Greenfield may have been illiterate and had diffeculty forming his letters, for the calligraphy of his horns, while carefully planned and deeply incised, is crudely done and is the poorest feature of his work. His figural carving is far superior. The Lorelei on this horn is olaced among five large sailing ships. Directly below the Lorelei is a panoramic view of Boston, at the left is a small vignette of Roxbury, and directly above is the British lion. The lion and the Lorelei, which stare directly at the viewer, have identical expressions.
