Description:
Powder horn inscribed "John Pemberton..." and signed by Jacob Gay (w. 1758-1787). Pemberton has not been identified. Jacob Gay's illumination of letters is a distictive feature of his work. Unlike the lettering of most Gay horns, the Pemberton lettering is not of the best quality. The animals, in which Gay specialized are expertly done but are smaller than usual and the soldiers are not so detailed nor so amusing as those on other Gay horns. Extreme cold, arthritis , or some other affliction may have inhibited Gay's carving abiliity at the time he made this horn. The same lack of freedom is seen on the Goding horn (#40) which Gay carved 17 days later.
