Description:
"Sergeant Ichabod French," of Guilford, Connecticut, probably Lake George, New York. The French horn is neatly carved but, according to Guthman, is not of the same high quality as the Bush, J.W., or Selkrig-Page examples. Of all the lettering, only that of French's name and rank approaches the thick-and-thin copperplate style. Other carvings on the horn include a large neatly carved tulip; a sizeable two-masted ship under full sail; a dancing couple, another large tulip, same dancing couple doing a different step, a rhyme in a circle, and more stylized tulips. Finally, odd-looking animals fill the remainder of the space. All the motifs are accented with deeply -cut dots.
