Description:
Powder horn inscribed: “DAVID WILLSON / HIS HORN 1747 / HOLLES BF / E:P / JEREMAIH:BURCH / 1754 [on plug].” This powder horn from the time of King George’s War illustrates many features found on the first American powder horns: highly stylized letters consisting of rigid double lines filled with dots or dashes, and a sharp V-shape where the branches of the letters and numerals meet. Unlike other horns from the 1740s, this example lacks a raised ring at the spout for the carrying strap. The red borders were probably made with a hot file. Neither owner of this horn—Willson or Burch—is identified. Hollis, New Hampshire
