Framed oil portrait of Mrs. Chloe Allis Judson (1739-1831), the wife of the Reverend Ephraim Judson of Sheffield, Massachusetts, which is inscribed on the back: "P...d By A Phillips October 18 1811/ C Judson Agd 72." Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) was in his early 20s when he painted Mrs. Judson, and the portrait is the second known picture by Phillips and the only one known to have been painted on board rather than canvas; the frame is original. The painting style anticipates Phillips' work later in the 1810s as the "Border Limner" along the New York/Massachusetts state line. Born in Hatfield, Mass., Chole Allis was the daughter of the Reverend Samuel Allis (1705-1790) and Hannah Sheldon (1707-1779), the daughter of John Sheldon (1681-1713) and Hannah Stebbins Sheldon (1664-1704) of Deerfield, who married in 1729. Chloe's grandmother, Hannah Stebbins Sheldon, the wife of John Sheldon (1658-c.1733), was killed during the 1704 raid; and her aunt, Hannah Sheldon Catilin (b.1683), who married Joseph Catlin (d.1704), in 1701, was one of the captives taken to Canada in 1704 and redeemed a year later by her father.
