Description:
Pewter circular dish made by Samuel Danforth (1774-1816) of Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked from December 1795, until his death in 1816 producing his eagle-marked wares. Samuel was the youngest son of Thomas Jr. (1731-1782) of Middletown, Conn., who began the metalworking dynasty that put Danforth pewter on thousands of American tables. Samuel was a very successful pewterer, whose estate was valued at over $11,000 net when he died; however, the quality of his output was uneven. The dish's underside has the impressed touchmarks: Stars over an eagle with a striped shield superimposed on the body and a cluster of arrows and olive branch in its talons in a circle surrounded by the remaining letters of SAMUEL DANFORTH; over "DANFORTH HARTFORD." in a serrated rectangle; over four smaller marks - "S.D", eagle, star, and sword. The dish has a molded and scribed rim, slightly dished rim, curving deep curvature, and flat circular base. The underside of dish has two strips of cork adhered to the back (these cork strips need to be removed); and a red jelly label that reads, "Deerfield". The underside of the rim exhibits some chatter marks that occurred during lathe skimming. Condition: fairly good condition, one inch dent or depression on the rim.
