Description:
Raffia basket was made by Mary Dahowski Bonneville (1906-1999) under the direction of Gertrude Porter Ashley (1858-1936), as part of the Society of Deerfield Industries. Mary was born in Deerfield and attended Deerfield Academy, where she graduated in 1923; she later attended North Adams Normal School (now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts), Smith College, and received a PhD. It has a shallow circular form, composed of wrapped raffia around a wire or possibly sea grass core - a spiral of wrapped raffia bands. Some of the raffia is colored and in the center is an abstract floral design of possibly flowers in green, pink, blue, and red; the outer rim has more faded colored raffia in pinks and blues. The basket is severely faded on the interior and the exterior is much more vivid and vibrant in color.
