Description: Circular mahogany card table that was owned by the Stebbins family of Deerfield and according to Henry Flynt, by Asa Stebbins (1767-1844). The table was probably made by William Lloyd (1779-1845), the son of John Jr. and Marianna Wright Lloyd of Springfield. Probably early nineteenth-century Springfield's most successful cabinetmaker, William Lloyd produced a variety of forms in the Federal style. His early training is still a mystery, but Lloyd was in business by 1802. He produced a wide variety of forms, several of which are in ths collection, including elegant clock cases (53.092.1), desks (1998.31), bookcases, sideboards (1998.32), bureaus (96.031), dining and card tables (probably 0423). This table, which is similar to one signed and dated 1802 in Florence Thompson Howe's "The Decline and Fall of William Lloyd" in "Antiques" (Feb. 1930), is decorated with three rows of banding (light-dark-light) around the top edge, checkered banding around the apron edge, and a lozenge at the top of each of the four straight tapered legs that are outlined in stringing and have inlay bands around the ankles.
