Hand-colored print titled "EVENING or the MAN of FEELING" and "Design'd by W. H. Bunbury Esqr" on the bottom. The scene depicts three men sitting around a dining table with a wine bottle, three wine glasses, and a brass candlestick with a sputtering candle. One man pushes his right boot against a boy's back who is trying to get the man's left boot off his foot next to a book jack and pair of glasses on the floor; a woman stands with a candlestick in one hand and a bed warmer in the other in the foreground; another woman is walking holding a chest in the right background and looking surprised up at the tall clock against the wall reading 11:00 pm; and there are three hats hung on the back wall. Henry William Bunbury (1750-1811) was an English caricaturist. After completing his studies at Cambridge University, he began to draw caricatures and other comic subjects, the first of which were etched and published in 1771. Bunbury then quickly rose to become one of the greatest satirical artists of the day with his etchings such as the series entitled, "Hints to Bad Horsemen." He also became close friends with the great artist, Thomas Rowlandson, who later engraved many of Bunbury's designs. Bunbury produced two parodies of Mackenzie’s "The Man of Feeling" (1771) in prints entitled "Morning: or, The Man of Taste" and "Evening: or, The Man of Feeling".These were published by J.R. Smith, No. 73 Opposite the Pantheon, Oxford Street, October 10th 1781, as a stipple engraving printed in sepia in a roundel.
