Description:
Print entitled "WINTER." scene depicts skaters on a pond or river, a man gestures to a group on the short as one man puts on his skates, and a man, 2 women, and a child look on, other skaters are in the background, also inscribed at base, "On blithesome frolicks bent, the youthful Swains,/ While every work of man is laid at rest/ Fond o'er the river crowd; and us they sweep./ On sounding Skaites, a thousand different ways,/ In circle poise swift as the wind, along/ The then gay land is madden'd all to joy"/ Published June 1st 1796 by John Fairburn, 146 Minories London./ Vide Thompson's Seasons " Print is hand colored in blue, red, green, and white. John Fairburn was a map, chart, bookseller and (from 1811) a print publisher. He published cheap caricatures and popular prints, but was bankrupt by 1810. The Seasons is a series of four poems written by the Scottish author James Thomson. The first part, Winter, was published in 1726, and the completed poem cycle appeared in 1730. The poem was extremely influential, and stimulated works by Joshua Reynolds, John Christopher Smith, Joseph Haydn, Thomas Gainsborough and J. M. W. Turner.
