Description:
Gershom Jones apprenticed with John Danforth, probably from about 1765 to 1772. In 1774, Jones started a business with Samuel Hamlin, which lasted until 1781. In 1784 Jones advertised "at the sign of the Pewter Platter near Mr. Jacob Whitman's Hay Scales", and he later moved to the corner of Westminster and Pleasant Streets. In 1806 he entered into business with his sons James and Samuel, but this only lasted a few months. Pewter cann (unmarked) with a shell design on the handle. The cann is solid cast, with two holes cut in rim hole in side, stout at handle base, and in good condition but dented. According to dealer Reginald French of Amherst, Mass., wonderful local piece, rare handle. Drinking vessels with a bulbous shape and without lids were popular in the colonies from the 1720s to around 1800; canns varied little in shape other than in their handles, which tended to be double-scrolled starting in the mid 1700s.
