Description:
English creamware globular teapot decorated in red, pink, green, yellow, and black, attributed to William Greatbatch (1735-1813). Greatbatch was a well-known Staffordshire potter, who had also worked for Thomas Whieldon and Josiah Wedgwood as a supplier of molds and ceramic wares; this pot's indented loop handle is is typical of handle fragments found on the Greatbatch site.. One side of the body is painted with a verse: "When lovers act their Part. they make A Double heart" with two interwined hearts below and framed with floral sprays; the other side has an elaborate flower bouquet. The lid is decorated with a garden scene with flowers and foliage, a fence in the foreground, and three flocks of birds flying overhead with clouds. The pot has an inverted loop or ear-shaped handle; a curved, fluted spout with molded acanthus leaves around its base, which is typical of Greatbatch but also used by many potters; and a slightly domed lid with an applied reclining flower knob with a flower and leaf terminal.
