Description:
Queen Anne dressing table attributed to Robert Lord who worked in Boston from 1730 to about 1750, training under Nathaniel Holmes (1703-1774), a master-merchant working in the furniture trade from 1725-1740. Holmes employed a number of craftspeople who were responsible for some of the most decorative treatments of the period, including inlaid stars, radiating fans, stringing, veneering, carving, and gilding. Little is know of Lord apart from his employment with Holmes; he married Katherine Haley in 1738, which suggests that he was born in the 1710s and completed his training about the time of his marriage. This table has inlaid compass stars on the rectangular top and two sides; stringing outlining the five drawers, border, and top; a carved and gilded shell on the center lower drawer; etched brass bail handles; two drop finials; and four cabriole legs ending in pad feet.
