Label Text:
William Henry Bartlett was a British topographical artist whose views appeared in numerous books, including American Scenery (1840) and Canadian Scenery Illustrated (1842), with texts by Nathaniel P. Willis. Published in England, these were beautifully illustrated compilations designed for the armchair traveler. View on the St. Lawrence illustrates a chapter in which Willis describes fishing practices of Native Americans, and in particular, the family of natives camped near Willis and Bartlett, from the perspective of a tourist. The book’s engraving, which Currier & Ives copied, present details of the encampment more clearly than the hand-colored lithograph. The publisher also changed the title of the original engraving, “Indian Scene on the St. Lawrence.”
Georgia Barnhill, 2014

After William Henry Bartlett. Published as "Indian Scene on the St. Lawrence" in Nathaniel P. Willis, "Canadian Scenery," vol. 2, p. 42 (1842).
