Potters working in the flourishing commercial city of Corinth were among the most innovative of their day, often appropriating decorative motifs, such as the sphinxes seen here, from ancient Mesopotamia and other regions of the Near East. The skilled artist who decorated this stately wine pitcher meticulously incised lines into the surface to render anatomical details on the animals that encircle the jug and added carefully executed dot rosettes to the background.
