Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, George Luks worked as an artist-correspondent for several newspapers before he turned to painting full-time. An outspoken figure who had a reputation for telling tales and enjoying life, George Luks was the least academic member of the group of painters known as "The Eight." Growing up near the Pennsylvania coal mines, Luks was a champion of the working class and his paintings and watercolors emphasize this affinity. "Pennsylvania Mining Town" is a dark and somber scene of a small town down on its luck.
