Description:
This Haida rattle is carved out of two pieces of wood that are nailed together and filled with small stones or seeds to create a rattling sound when used during dances, ceremonies, or rituals. Although many Haida rattles feature two distinctive faces (one on either side of the rattle), this one only has one countenance. The carved face is painted red, green, and blue, with black eyebrows. Because it has a "hooked" nose, it likely represents a bird of some sort--perhaps Hawk or Eagle. AP2018
