Label Text:
George White was born in Cavendish, Vermont on January 8, 1797. White was a member of the “Greenbush Group,” a small circle of artisans, entrepreneurs, and printmakers/publishers based out of Windsor County, Vermont, during the first half of the nineteenth century. The group was led by James Wilson, the first globe maker in America, and Isaac Eddy, who established a print shop in the tiny hamlet of Greenbush around 1810, the group had among its members Ebenezer Hutchinson, Moody Morse Peabody, and Lewis Robinson. White died in Reading, Vermont on December 12, 1873. White was apprenticed to Isaac Eddy of Weathersfield, Vermont. Not much is known about White and his output but it appears that he stopped printmaking in the late 1850s. Only two publications of White's have been identified. They are a small map of Vermont and another of New Hampshire which were published in the early 1850s
