Description:
One of two silver tablespoons (see HD 2009.26.10) with a pointed oval bowl, rounded shoulders, and upturned double-swell fiddle handle with a short front mid-rib, which is marked "J.H. MORSE" in a rectangle for James H. Morse (b.1829) and "PURE COIN" in a rectangle on the reverse of the handle, and engraved "LLB" in script on the front of the handle. These spoons are part of a collection of silver spoons from the Viola Wilby estate. An attached paper tag reads: "Aunt / Laura / Wells" on one side and "I / think / 8h" on the other side. In 1860, Laura Lee Bakerly (1835-1913) married Edward M. Wells (b.1829), the son of Joel B. Wells (1795-1841) and Sarah Merritt Wells (b.1796) of Deerfield. James Harvey Morse apprenticed with his father James Morse (1784-1828) about 1843, and worked as a silversmith and engraver in Westfield, Massachusetts, from c.1849-1865.
