Label Text:
In eighteenth-century America, the drinking of alcoholic beverages (such as wine, beer, and rum-based punches) was an important part of social life: they were consumed ceremonially as part of religious gatherings; in communal celebration at weddings, christenings and funerals; and convivially imbibed in taverns and public houses. At home, those who could afford fine silver would drink beer or ale from tankards and canns – tulip-shaped vessels on a circular foot. This bulbous cann represents a typical form of Massachusetts drinking ware of this period.
