Description: Portable medicine chest made for travelling by Thomas Weld of Boston, who was listed in the 1807 Boston Directory. Weld distributed "Medicine chest of all kinds, with directions suitable to their contents, are carefully put up by Thomas Weld ... composed of medicines of the best quality, and sold at a low price." published in Boston by Belcher & Armstrong, 1806. There is a paper label (3 1/2 x 2 1/2") on the inside top with a steel pen drawing of eagle holding banner reading: "NEAR THE MARKET BOSTON" over "Medicine Chests. / For all Voyages / Carefully Prepared by / Thomas Weld." There is a ship drawn on lower left corner of label, and a medicine chest drawn on lower right. Painted a brown-black paint with green beneath, the chest is dovetailed on the front and back, and has a molded edge on the lid and base, metal lock and key, and strap-hinged top (original iron hinges) fixed with nails and screws. The interior is divided into 19 compartments of varying sizes; the compartments would have held bottles of various medicines. Unfortunately, the original contents are missing.
