Description:
Man's three-piece suit in orange figured silk with green plain-weave silk lining and silver buttons. During a wool conference in 2007 at Historic Deerfield, a group of specialists conferred and decided that the mint green taffeta lining and other aspects of the tailoring suggested that the suit may have been made in Italy for an American on the "Grand Tour." Other characteristics such as silver ribbons, lined with leather at the knees, are typical of tailoring techniques used in the colonies just prior to and after the Revolutionary War. The rich colored silk is similar to that worn by gentlemen on the Grand Tour in a number of portraits done by the Italian painter Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787).
