Description:
Powder horn inscribed "Jonathan Clark Lewis..." and signed by Jacob Gay (w. 1758-1787). This is an example of Gay's best work. He had tremendous engraving ability and his finest achievements seem to have involved close study of an engraved design source. The magnificant, beautifully illuminated lettering seen here, must have been copied from a cipher book or printed document, is placed on a large, high quality horn. Gay covered the rest of the body with exceptionally large, graceful animals suited to the size of the horn.
