Many historians consider William Tecumseh Sherman the second most important Union general, after his close friend General Ulysses S. Grant. After succeeding Grant as head of the Military Division of the Mississippi and assuming command of all Union troops in the Western Theater of the war, Sherman successfully captured Atlanta, Georgia, a victory which rallied Union morale at a critical time: Lincoln’s reelection campaign.
Shortly after the war ended, Mathew Brady, the proprietor of the preeminent Civil War photography studio, offered to photograph Sherman with all of his generals. Sherman was skeptical that his staff would remain in Washington for the appointment, but of the seven men, only Francis P. Blair missed the sitting. Barnard subsequently photographed Blair separately, pasted him into the far right of the original composition, and rephotographed the new, complete grouping.
