Description:
Hair bracelet and ring (F.646.2) reflecting a ubiquitous, affordable jewelry form that was available to many women during the middle of the 19th century. Both pieces are made from three twisted bands of brown hair woven aruond a three-dimensional dowel or rod. Hair sent to a local jeweler, or a business like Godey's Ladies Magazine, would be crafted into a form like this bracelet and ring. The bracelet secures with a gold-plated, engraved post button clasp in three-parts. The hair ring features an engraved gold top. Both the bracelet and ring were owned by Harriet Jane Morgan, born in Northfield, Mass., in 1834. According to the donor, Doris Harriett Tisdale, her grandaughter, Harriett married Henry Pratt of Litchfield, Conn., who was a Brevet Captain of the 1st Conn. Heavy Artillery.
