Description:
Woman's shorter-length necklace featuring alternating green emerald or paste stones and clear, round-cut paste stones, mounted in gold-plated silver settings. The main body of the necklace may date to c.1790, but this may also be an assembled piece, reworked in the early 20th century into a necklace from older pieces. The bezel is pinched to resemble prongs, a characteristic of French-made jewelry. The necklace is missing its pendant; a square ring is present (soldered on, but could be later). Gold plating was applied to the back, probably to help minimize degradation caused by contact with the skin. There is an inscription on the center stone, "2/4," on the proper left side of the missing pendant. Another inscription on the stone holding the clasp, soldered to that stone, reads "2 3/16."
