Known now as Motien Pass, but referred to as Matenrei under Japanese occupation, this location was a crucial site for the expanding Japanese Empire, providing a gateway from the coast to Japanese strongholds in Manchuria. The Battle of Motien, pictured here, occured on June 27, 1904, when Japanese forces surrounded the armies led by Count Fyodor Keller (1850–1904), a Russian Lieutenant General, here seen astride his horse in the center panel, and forced him to retreat. Keller attempted once more, only a month later, to take control of Motien Pass and was killed in the conflict.
The middle-right of the rightmost panel is signed "Kiyochika" in black with a red gourd-shaped artist's seal that reads "Kobayashi." The series title is printed vertically descending at upper-middle of the leftmost panel, followed by an inscription describing the scene.
