Description:
AD))): In the foreground of Feininger’s seascape, a large area of nearly solid black ink juts out towards the sea. In the left foreground, a small human figure wearing a top hat reclines directly on this black seashore, with their silhouette devoid of ink. The figure’s right arm is bent at an angle to support their weight while reclining. Beyond the figure, in the central foreground, five black figure silhouettes stand amidst the seascape on the black bank. The leftmost figure within this group holds a long vertical object as a walking support. The central figure of this group is slightly larger in scale than the others and wears a top hat similar to that of the reclining figure. Beyond the figures in the foreground, large, thick horizontal lines indicate the start sea or the edge of the beach and sand that lead into the sea. These horizontal lines continue uninterrupted into the background, aside from large regions of negative space that may represent sailboats. The end of the visible sea horizon is indicated with a thick horizontal line. Above the sea, the sky is dotted with dashed slanted lines that indicate raindrops. A horizontal swath of dark, jagged clouds frames the top of the landscape. (Madeline Walsh '27 / Elena Tongg Weiler '27)
