Exhibtion label text from Faint/Hidden/Shrouded: Contemplating Obscurity (March 27-May 10, 2024):
This black and white photograph captures a masterful play of light and shadow, portraying a woman with elegance and mystery. Holding a cigarette in her gloved hand, she partially covers one side of her face - the rest obscured by shadows crafted with the photographer’s meticulous darkroom skills.
Gibson's intentional choices in the printing process create an enigmatic narrative, allowing light to grace only the left side of her face, illuminating a slim triangle of highlight on her cheekbone and eyebrow. The deliberate manipulation of shadows and highlights speaks to the photographer's skill in creating an image that tantalizingly conceals and reveals simultaneously.
