Description:
Chinese export porcelain oval basket with pierced (recticulated, openwork, or punchwork) flared sides and two molded handles, decorated in the Famille rose palette of yellow, iron red, turquoise, green, blue, rose, black, orange, and gilding. This piece shows the influence of Meissen decoration in a Chinese form made for Continental market; the idea was derived from the table centerpieces devised at Meissen after 1740. The piercing, a laborious hand-cutting process, and molding developed on the Continent and in English earthenware and porcelain factories. The well has two yellow, blue, rose, iron red, green, turquoise, and black scrolling floral sprays; the basketweave sides are plain. The exterior sides are studded with molded, multicolored flowers. The twisted rope-like gilt handles have molded flower blossoms at the terminal attachments at each end.
