Description:
English wine glass with round funnel bowl, multiple spiral opaque twist stem, and conical foot; bowl is molded with diamonds and straight flutes; the bowl also has thick walls and a conical interior; rough pontil mark. The toastmaster's glass had a deceptive bowl so that it would not hold as much as it appears to in order to keep the toastmaster (or innkeeper) from becoming incapacitated during many toasts common in the 18th century. According to glass scholar Dwight Lanmon, in May 1977, this glass is an especially rare form with an opaque twist stem.
