Description:
Circular silver bowl with a flared rim raised on molded spreading foot, which is marked "REVERE" in a rectangle for Paul Revere, Jr. (1734-1818) on the base next to the initials "B / RS" (appears to be over earlier initials) and a scrolled pattern to the left of the "B." According to Flynt and Fales, Revere gave this bowl to Hannah Lee Foster (1805-1900) of Manchester, Massachusetts, when she was a young girl. The daugher of Israel Foster and Hannah Lee, Hannah married Benjamin Leach Allen (1803-1865) of Manchester, the son of John Allen (1776-1834) and Ruth Leach (1778-1843), in 1824; the bowl remained in the Allen family until 1947. To explain the initials, Flynt and Fales suggest that the bowl may have been given back to Revere as a credit. This bowl compares with Revere's famous 'Sons of Liberty' example (now at the MFA, Boston) and others by his hand; these have spawned the famous "Revere bowl" still mass-produced by such firms as Reed and Barton. The design is an economical and elegant one and lends itself to the material. Also compare this bowl with the sugar bowl (HD 67.452) by Paul Revere Sr. (1702-1754). Wgt. 10 1/2 ozs., 3 grs.
