Description:
English delft plate decorated in light purple with a landscape scene of a young shepherd in classical garb leaning on his staff, surrounded by sponged trees and foliage, a faint tower on a hill in the background, and two flocks of flying birds overhead. A very English style of landscape painting, which foreshadowed English watercolors, began to develop in the middle of the 18th century. Inspired by print sources such as a drawing by Francois de Cuvillies of a shepherd and shepherdess in a landscape, engraved and published as the title page of "Morceaux de Caprices, a Divers Usages" in 1770, these classically-inspired and romanticised designs were very popular.
