Description:
Silver porringer with a flared rim and domed base made by William Cowell Sr. (1682-1736) with two touchmarks - "WCowell" in script in a shaped rectangle inside the bowl; and a star and pellets over "WC" in roman letters and mullet below, all in a shield on the back of the handle - and engraved with the initials "E / AR" on the elaborate, geometric handle. The initials are thought to be those of Andrew Eliot (1683-1749) of Beverly, Massachusetts, who married Ruth Symonds (b.c.1689-1760) in 1707 and became a merchant in Boston. Their son was the Reverend Andrew Eliot of New North Church, Boston. The porringer came from Mrs. Gregory S. Prince, the daughter of Edward E. Minor, an American silver collector. Wgt. 7 1/2 ozs., 3 dwts.
