Description:
Two small tapersticks with turned shafts and octagonal bases with incurving chamfered or cut corners. In silver candlesticks, these corners began to appear about 1718-1720 as with the new shape of column. Tapersticks were made to hold small thin candles called tapers that were commonly used to melt wax for sealing documents and were often found on candle slides, secretaries, and tea tables. They were also known to be used for lighting tobacco in clay pipes, illumination, and producing a sweet smell.
