Description:
Silver tablespoon with an elliptical bowl and a rounded drop and eleven-lobed shell, hemispherical shaft tapered to an upturned rounded-end handle, long middle rib on front of handle, which is marked "PARKMAN" in a rectangle in script lettering for John Parkman (1716-1748). Parkman probably trained with John Burt (1692/3-1745/6) completing his training around 1737, and appears to have been sucessful in business given the value of his estate. According to Kane, although the number and variety of silversmith's tools in his estate indicate that Parkman had a large shop, only a few spoons with this mark have been recorded. Parkman appears to have been a productive silversmith who probably chose to fabricate work for others to sell, rather than involving himself in the retail end of the business.
