Description:
One of a pair of Chinese export porcelain candlesticks decorated in the Famille rose palette in pink, purple, green, yellow, brown, orange, black, and gilding. The form is based on European silver forms that were also made in brass, pewter, and paktong. From around 1700, the Chinese made candlesticks in many varieties, all based on European examples, and usually formed parts of dinner services of about 200 pieces or more. Separate candlesticks were seldom bought at least by the Dutch VOC; from 1730-1795, only 475 pieces were shipped to the Netherlands. Private individuals also shipped dinner sets with candlesticks, which over the years often became separated from their sets. The molded socket rim has a gilt band over a band of interconnected gilt scrolls, over a pair of and a single molded band, each highlighted in gilt and two bands of pink. The stem has two bands of floral sprays with two molded bands between, and gilt band around the lower knop. The circular depression has three floral sprays in black, and the octagonal base has a band of floral sprays.
