Description:
Wholecloth blue cylinder-printed, plain-weave cotton quilt made up of four vertical panels (each about 20 1/4" wide) of a repeating Chinoiserie design with figures and buildings in a landscape setting; knife edge; a four-piece cotton and linen? backing in blue and white; cotton batting; and two cutout corner to fit around bed posts. The quilting is done in a Chevron pattern, 6 stitches per inch. The cut-out lower corners of this example suggests it was made (or later owned) in New England. The cut-out lower corners of the quilt suggest it was originally made to fit onto a four-poster bed, possibly in the New England area. A similar example of this design, printed in red, is in the collection of The Winterthur Museum (acc. #1969.3393) and shares stylistic similarities to prints made by John Marshall.
