Description:
Press molded circular cup plate with short brim, flat base, and transfer printed in underglaze dark blue with an unidentified French view known as "Small Arch Stone Bridge." The scene depicts two figures standing alongside a stream that runs underneath an arched stone bridge. The plate is part of a larger series known as Wood's "French Series." The plate's reverse features the impressed mark of Hartford, Connecticut, importer, Peter Morton, which reads: "PETER MORTON / HARTFORD." China merchant Peter Morton of 68 Front St., Hartford, CT, had a business relationship with Enoch Wood -- and possibly was an American agent for the Staffordshire firm. Many of his advertisements relate that his products are "received direct from the manufactory."
