Label Text:
Lucy Williams models her collages after photographs from old magazines. She says she is interested in the modernist idea of improving society through architectural design, for example through public recreational facilities like this pool. But while her subjects include many famous buildings, she more often chooses ordinary and unknown buildings that have since been closed or demolished. In the decades following World War II, anxieties over racial desegregation and government deficits led to the closure of thousands of public pools. Williams does not make overt political statements, but a kind of nostalgia resides in her collages—not for buildings no longer present, but for dreams now past.
