In this lithograph, Oda has chosen as his subject the electric streetlights of Ginza, one of the most significant changes to occur to the neighborhood’s main streets, which by 1929 were lined with wide sidewalks, multistory department stores, and willow trees. Oda’s polychrome lithography proved the perfect medium for such a scene, allowing him to create vibrant, even gestural, streaks of rain, along with fields of glowing yellow. The low horizon line at once echoes the landscapes of Hiroshige while also emphasizing the spatial regression created by Ginza’s new boulevards, which provided Tokyoites with such never-before-seen vistas.
