Description: This is the first bound trade edition of A Humument, A Treated Victorian Novel. Produced by Hansjörg Mayer in Stuttgart and distributed by Thames & Hudson. It is reprint of artist's original book made by drawing, collaging, etc in a found novel. A Humument has been a work in progress since 1966 when artist Tom Phillips set himself a task: to find a second-hand book for threepence and alter every page by painting, collage and cut-up techniques to create an entirely new version. He found his threepenny novel in a junk shop on Peckham Rye, South London. This was an 1892 Victorian obscurity titled A Human Document by W.H. Mallock and he titled his altered book A Humument. The first version of all 367 treated pages was privately published by the Tetrad press in 1973. This work is part of a collection of objects donated together that includes an artist's book, A Humument, A Treated Victorian Novel (First Edition) UM1982.44a; a video interview with the artist UM1982.44b; a print UM1982.44c; and an illustrated brochure UM1982.44d. Published by Thames and Hudson, London.
